White. - Animation

This is an animation I made for my university digital arts course. It is a visual interpretation of the song “White” by Odd Future and Frank Ocean. It explores death not through literal or religious lenses, but as an abstract, emotional experience of detachment, dissociation, and transcendence. The narrative animation blends first and third-person perspectives to reflect a fragmented consciousness navigating the stage between life and what comes after.

Visually, the animation uses bold lines, symbolic imagery, and contrasting colour palettes to depict the emotional shift from sorrow to peace. Earthy reds and browns ground the “living” world in heaviness and grief, while soft pastels and whites define the afterlife, evoking love, memory, and release. Recurring motifs like eyes, the fence, the road, the insect, and the bike each represent ideas of observation, transformation, boundaries, and motion through time.

Figures appear as simplified shadows or glows, representing not only loved ones, but past selves and moments. The animation lingers in each scene, using a slower frame rate to mirror the dreamlike pacing of the song and to allow emotion to settle. It’s not about death as an end, but about the lingering presence of love, memory, and identity in the space between. The transition of life to death, and a sort of release of all that was lost in both states.
